One of the biggest hesitations around 5G adoption has been the perceived need for high-performance (and high-cost) solutions. That changes with 5G RedCap (Reduced Capability). RedCap brings a middle ground between 4G LTE and full-fledged 5G, offering lower power consumption and cost while still delivering key 5G benefits like lower latency and improved network efficiency.
For industries like logistics, utilities, and industrial IoT—where 5G’s speeds aren’t always necessary—RedCap enables a practical path forward. 5G adoption is no longer just for high-end applications but for a broad range of connected systems. The Teltonika RUT271 and RUT976 routers are ideal for mid-range applications that don’t need full-scale 5G speeds but still benefit from its reliability and efficiency.
RedCap (Reduced Capability) is a streamlined variation of 5G technology which is designed specifically to accommodate systems that require 5G-level low-latency and connectivity, but don’t need 5G-level fast throughput speeds. RedCap is ideal for offering cost effective connectivity for IoT and industrial-type applications such as solar power, sensors, trackers, remote monitoring, and low-throughput applications where high-speed data transfer is not essential but cost and low power consumption are key. Think of it as stripped back 5G. With 3G networks shutting down, 4G networks becoming more congested, and 5G reaching affordability and maturity, the transition to 5G for many industries is no longer a question of if, but when.
RedCap offers several key advantages:
- Lower Latency: Compared to existing LTE-M and NB-IoT technologies, RedCap provides reduced latency, enabling near real-time data communication for time-sensitive applications.
- Higher Data Rates: RedCap supports peak data rates much higher than LTE Cat-1, making it suitable for applications requiring more bandwidth, such as video surveillance or smart grid monitoring.
- Energy Efficiency: The technology improves power efficiency, extending battery life for IoT devices – crucial for wearables and remote sensors.
- Cost-Effective: By reducing device complexity, RedCap makes 5G connectivity more affordable for a wider range of IoT applications.
The RUT271 router supports SA architecture, this 5G router can wirelessly support up to 50 end devices and features the low latency of 5G at affordable pricing. The RUT271 supports Wi-Fi and is backward compatible with 4G LTE Cat 4.
This industrial-grade RedCap 5G router is also equipped with WAN failover, two 10/100 RJ45 ports, a compact and durable design, and numerous other brilliant features making it ideal for your IoT deployment.
Each device with eSIM support comes with a preinstalled bootstrap profile that includes 10MB of data, which is activated upon the device's first use. The 10MB of data is sufficient to download a dedicated eSIM profile from your service provider upon first use of your device. This feature is especially useful for deploying devices in remote locations where no alternative internet connection is available, simplifying the setup process.
Once a new eSIM profile is successfully downloaded, the bootstrap profile and all related configurations, including the bootstrap eSIM zone with its pre-configured traffic-blocking rules, are automatically removed. The newly downloaded eSIM profile is then set as the default primary SIM.
Please Note: The bootstrap profile is valid for 1 year starting from the manufacturing date of the device. After 1 year, the profile will no longer be available, meaning you will have to follow the default procedure of activating an eSIM, which requires an internet connection from another source.
