One of the biggest hesitations around 5G adoption has been the perceived need for high-performance (and high-cost) solutions. That changes with 5G RedCap (Reduced Capability). RedCap brings a middle ground between 4G LTE and full-fledged 5G, offering lower power consumption and cost while still delivering key 5G benefits like lower latency and improved network efficiency.
By bringing these disparate qualities together, RedCap equipment can be significantly more cost-efficient and energy-friendly than standard 5G, while still performing at a higher level than standard 4G.
As a technology that excels in low-latency, high-capacity, low-throughput, and energy efficiency, RedCap is ideal for IoT applications such as data-monitoring sensors, industrial machinery, smart grids, smartwatches and standalone CCTV systems. It can be particularly optimal in scenarios where LTE-M equipment would be too slow but standard-5G would be too expensive.

The RUT271 is the first of Teltonika’s new RedCap range of 5G routers. It’s capable of reaching 5G speeds of up to 223Mbps (or 150Mbps over 4G) and has x3 SMA antenna ports; x1 for WiFi, and x2 for mobile.
With two 10/100 Ethernet ports and a single SIM card slot, this router is ideal for small-scale low-throughput scenarios such as data sensors, or even potentially domestic networks which only one or two people need to rely on at any one time.

The RUT976 is the other of Teltonika’s RedCap 5G router range and is slightly larger in size than the RUT271. Although it has the same maximum throughput speeds, the RUT976 can achieve stronger WiFi connections owing to its additional WiFi antenna. This router also has four 10/100 Ethernet ports, allowing it to accommodate for slightly larger networks.
Among more key advantages of the RUT976 are that it supports GPS and dual-SIM failover, making it more useful and consistent when travelling. The backup SIM slot also just makes it a reliable router in general owing to the instant failover it provides should the primary SIM network go down.
A final feature to note is the RUT976 support of multiple other physical interfaces, including RS232, RS485, and multiple I/Os. This allows it to be used with any specialist equipment that makes use of such interface, increasing its versatility in many IoT sectors.
Ultimately, both the RUT271 and RUT976 fulfil key niches for cellular routers that need to be reliable and forward-thinking while still maintaining relatively economical pricing.
