POYNTING Case studies

Case Study 1 - Shipping Group

A Shipping Group operates its own fleet, comprising container feeder, multipurpose and offshore service vessels, and provides all-round ship management services to third parties. With a small and productive workforce ashore, the short sea shipping company focuses on technology and quality systems to improve the efficiency of the Shipping team.

The option to migrate to 5G is important as the equipment and antennas are all 5G ready. The POYNTING OMNI-291 marine antenna was chosen as it is mechanically and electrically optimized for use in a marine environment. As is customary with all POYNTING antennas high performance, wide bandwidth and exceptional quality is a given.

The customer said:
“The data usage in the first weeks is already 4 times more than expected and 8 times better than the previous solution due to the quality and reliability of the network connection!”

Case Study 2 - Tourist Ferry

A tourist-ferry company in Germany have found that modern tourists demand Wi-Fi internet services to share their experiences on Social Media and to remain connected with the outside world. Providing tourists with this service is becoming an expectation which enhances their experience and customer satisfaction. The ferry passengers had little or no cellular and data connection onboard. It was necessary to satisfy the passenger's needs for a stable internet connection and make Wi-Fi calling services possible onboard.

The local distributor of POYNTING Antennas in Germany provided a solution using a Cellular/LTE & Wi-Fi router connected to two OMNI-291 and one WLAN-60 antenna.

Two POYNTING OMNI-291 omnidirectional antennas, which are specifically designed for marine use, where used as donor antennas in order to receive 2×2 MIMO LTE for enhanced LTE connectivity.

POYNTING’s WLAN-60 antenna was also used, which provides Wi-Fi distribution to the passengers onboard. This antenna is highly efficient and suited to such an application, where highly reliable and excellent quality is expected.

Before the implementation of this system, 0 to 1 bar cellular reception was experienced, but afterwards, 4 to 5 bars were reported by the passengers. The passengers previously had little or no throughput before, but now have 1.55Mbps to 10.83Mbps depending on where the ferry is on the lake.

"While equipping Nova for this voyage, we searched and found a range of dedicated aerials from a company called POYNTING. We bought a good basic non-marine aerial (XPOL-1), spoke with their helpful and knowledgeable UK distributor Solwise, and ended up agreeing they’d provide us with the more substantial fully marinised (waterproof IP68) POYNTING Omni-402 for the voyage. Both these aerials can be used to enhance marina wifi too, but we weren’t equipped for that – we wanted to use our own mobile SIM card when possible, for speed and security."
