5GHz Outdoor Antenna WiFi

In the UK , there are two main types of radio devices that use the 5GHz frequency bands. The most common are those devices that conform to the 11a standard. These are licence free devices similar to the 2.4GHz devices but, obviously, operating in the 5GHz bands. The other devices are the Band C devices. Band C is a licenced band and radio devices for use in Band C have to conform to some extra, rather strict specifications e.g they must have auto-gain control and auto- channel hopping.

Now, in the EU and UK, the bands set aside for 11a devices are 5.15-5.35GHz and 5.47- 5.725GHz. The frequencies allocated to Band C are 5.725-5.850Ghz. However, just to confuse things a bit more, the frequency range 5.725-5.850Ghz is also used for 11a devices in the US. This means that 11a equipment which is designed for the US market (and this can be both radio devices and antenna) will be using the wrong frequencies. US equipment will be set to use the frequencies which, in the UK, are allocated for licenced Band C equipment so take care with grey market equipment!

We stock a range of 5GHz antenna suitable for the UK/EU 11a frequencies (5.15-5.35GHz and 5.47- 5.725GHz) and also antenna for the Band C range 5.725-5.850Ghz (which are, of course, also suitable for US designed 11a devices).

A useful article to read if you are looking to link buildings.

As our article discusses, the 5GHz WiFi bands are very complicated with some very strange legal restrictions on their usage you should therefore take care when selecting radio equipment for use in this range.
